The
National Trusts around Australia plan a variety of events, exhibitions,
concerts and special occasions for the benefit and enjoyment of their
members, and for the general public.
States and Territories organise their own event and activity programs, so find out 'What's On' by visiting the National Trust State and Territory web sites.
Heritage Festivals Around the country
Each year, National Trust Festivals are held in many places throughout
Australia. Heritage Festivals are generally held in Autumn- between
April and June.
This
year NSW, ACT, Tasmania, Queensland, and the Northern Territory are
holding Heritage Festivals. Each state or territory festival has a
significant theme. The 2008 themes were related to Place. The 2009
themes relate to water, space and creating an identity.
NSW
Our Place in Space: Under the Southern Cross
4 April - 19 April 2009
400 years ago, Galileo first observed the heavens using a telescope.
2009 is the International Year of Astronomy and the NSW Trust is
celebrating astronomy and its contributions to society and culture at
hundreds of fantastic events across metropolitan and regional NSW.
Events include stargazing, discovery tours, art exhibitions, walks,
talks, awards, photography displays and community fairs. National Trust
properties explore ideas on space throughout the state, Heritage awards
are presented and NSW students can enter the annual festival themed
schools competition.
Signature events include the Norman Lindsay Festival of Children’s
literature, a sketching workshop at the National Trust Centre,
Observatory Hill on 17 April, the 175th birthday of Trust property
“Lindesay” on 4 April and of course National Trust Day on Sunday 19th
April. Various Trust properties throughout NSW will be free of charge
this day to celebrate World Heritage Day (18th April).

ACT
Canberra and Region Heritage Festival 09: Adventures in time and space
4 – 19 April 2009
Joining with both the NSW Trust and the ACT government, the ACT Trust
asks you to experience Deep Space at the Canberra Deep Space Centre at
Tidbinbilla, or discover astronomy at Mt Stromlo Observatory. Enjoy the
wide open spaces during a bushwalk at Namadgi National Park, or if you
can’t make the walk or want to know more afterwards, imagine Namadgi in
a follow up talk at the National Museum. Visit the Cotter Exhibition at
the Canberra Glass works or take a heritage journey of Reid, or a
twilight tour of Albert Hall.
Other festival events include a series of lectures offered through the
Donald Horne Institute on Food and Space, Convict Spaces and Australian
spaces in heritage films.

Tasmania
Water- Our island’s life forces
1- 31 May 2009
Tasmania’s state-wide festival is all about the heritage of water.
Beginning with LaTrobe in Flood, at the LaTrobe Courthouse on the first
of May, there are over 100 events in the festival. The festival looks
at different aspects of water, including the story of women convicts
transported by water to the Cascade Female Factory, and the launch of
the book “The Water Getters”, Participate in daily waterfront treasure
hunts. Find out how Hobart quenched its thirst, enjoy a Trout weekend,
a cruise, heritage steam train rides, heritage golf festival or films
about lighthouse keepers, fishing and shipwrecks or talks about
longitude, and many theatrical events and exhibitions including special
events on Mothers’ Day. Annual heritage awards will be presented during
May and the festival concludes with a whiskey making show on the 31st.

Queensland
“The Making of Queensland”
Sunday 10 May to Sunday 17 May 2008
The Queensland Heritage Festival is the State's largest celebration of
Queensland's heritage and plays a key role in fostering an appreciation
of our history and our cultural identity. This year will once again see
a variety of community-hosted events held across metropolitan and
regional Queensland.
The National Trust brings together community groups, schools, heritage
organisations, the business community and local government to create a
unique program of events

Northern Territory
Ten Days at the Top
The National Trust of Australia (Northern Territory) invites you to be
part of our ‘Ten Days at the Top’ Heritage Festival celebrations. The
Trust has teamed up with a number of community group partners,
including Northern Territory Library, Conservation Volunteers,
Institute of Surveyors Australia, National Archives of Australia, East
Point Military Museum and NT Archives, to offer you a wide range of
events & activities over the ten-day festival.
Events include:
Patrons Dinner, Opening of the ‘People of Burnett House’ Exhibition;
Harbour Tour; Teachers In-Service Day; Heritage Fair & Family Fun
Day’ – ‘Neighbours – Sharing Stories’ (17th May - 2pm –7pm); Film Night
@ Deckchair Cinema; Heritage Seminar; Quiz Night and Heritage Walks
& Guided Bus Tours.

Travel with the Trust
The National Trust of Australia (ACT) and the Women’s Committee of the
National Trust of Australia (NSW) run tours for Trust members and
friends.
Tours run from half-day local walks to international and interstate tours of some weeks with everything in-between.
Future events include geology and heritage cave tours, day tours to
Binalong, walks exploring indigenous time-lines and European history,
behind the scenes tours of national icons, weekend breaks in Goulburn,
architectural tours of Berry and other regional NSW tours, and
interstate visits exploring Australia’s heritage and international
tours to various places in Italy during 2009 and 2010.
